The tragic death of Hilda | |
Developed from a small menagerie the Prospect Park Zoo in Brooklyn, New York was opened in 1935, at a time when modern zoos began to surround their animal exhibits by water-filled or dry moats instead of bars. Unfortunately the zoo circumscribed its elephant pen by an exaggerated dry concrete moat, 12 ft. wide and 25 ft. deep. On August 29, 1938, this huge moat became fate to Hilda when the 8-year-old male elephant Bill, in an instant of mad mischief, butted his 7-year-old mate into it. There she laid on crumpled legs, apparently paralyzed. Hilda had been saved from the ditch but she refused to move her hind legs. After several days of grace in the hope that veterinarians could rig up some sort of splint, it was decided that nothing could be done for her and Hilda was shot to death on September 8, 1938, to end her suffering. |
