Historical information about the Gent Zoo
Impressed by the Antwerp Zoo some citizens of Gent decided to build up their own zoological garden and in 1851 the Gent Zoo opened its doors for the visitors the first time. The animal collection contained a diversity of exotic animals like antelopes, birds, tigers and an elephant.

The first elephant of the Gent zoo was called Betsy. She arrived at the zoo in 1855 and was very popular, even children could ride on her. When she died in 1887, her meat was sold and the skeleton went to the Gent university. The second and at the same time last Asian elephant of the Gent Zoo was called Jack, but apparently sometimes was also called Betsy, an elephant of an impressive stature.

Due to decreasing interest the zoo closed its doors forever in the end of 1903, only 52 years after its inauguration. Jack was sold to a butcher, who shot him down in May 1904 and sold his meat to the Netherlands. Afterwards his skull was exhibited in a Gent hotel for some time.
